Each slider moves one octave-wide band by up to 12 dB either way. The 31 Hz and 16 kHz ends act as shelves for everything below and above them. Frequently Asked Questions

What do the ten bands cover?

The centers run from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, doubling at every step. One slider per octave of hearing. The bottom slider is a shelf that carries everything below 31 Hz with it and the top slider a shelf for everything above 16 kHz, because at the outer ends 'all the lows' or 'all the highs' is what you actually mean; the eight sliders between work on their own octave-wide neighbourhoods.

Where do the presets come from?

They are the classic ten-band curves that desktop music players shipped for decades, Rock, Techno, Full Bass, Classical, Laptop Speakers and the rest, scaled to fit this tool's ±12 dB sliders so every curve keeps its exact shape. They are starting points tuned for their genre's typical balance; switch to Custom to adjust from any of them yourself.

Why do neighbouring sliders affect each other?

The bands overlap on purpose. If each slider covered exactly one octave with no overlap, two adjacent boosts would leave an audible dip between their centers; the bands are made slightly wider so equal settings merge into one smooth plateau. The price is that a big move on one slider slightly raises or lowers its neighbours' regions too. True of every graphic equalizer built this way.

What does clipping protection do?

After filtering, the output's peak is measured; if a boosted curve pushed it past full scale, the entire result is turned down so it peaks at -1 dBFS, and the applied trim appears in the results. A limiter would keep more loudness but it would ride the loudest crests back down and partly undo the tonal balance you just set. A uniform trim keeps the curve intact and only costs level, which is stated rather than hidden.

Why does the 16 kHz slider do little on some files?

A file can only contain frequencies up to half its sample rate, so recordings sampled below 32 kHz have nothing at 16 kHz to move; the band is safely repositioned to the top of what the file can represent. Heavily compressed sources can also simply lack energy that high even at full sample rates, in which case there is little for the slider to act on.
