How are clicks at the joins avoided?

Every seam is treated. With a crossfade, the tail of one track and the head of the next occupy the same samples, weighted by the equal-power cosine law so the level stays flat through the transition. With a gap or a direct join, a 10 ms fade-out and fade-in pair removes the amplitude step that would otherwise be audible as a pop.

What does the equal-power crossfade do differently from a linear one?

A linear crossfade dips about 3 dB at its midpoint on material that is not identical in both files, which is audible as the join briefly getting quieter. The equal-power law weights the two sides by cosine and sine, whose squares always sum to one, so the perceived level holds steady through the blend.

What happens when a gap and a crossfade are both set?

The gap wins. A gap means silence between the tracks, and there is nothing for a crossfade to blend into, so the crossfade is skipped for that seam. Each track edge next to the gap still gets a short anti-click fade so the silence starts and ends cleanly.

Can I join files with different sample rates or channel counts?

Yes. Files are conformed before joining: by default every track is resampled up to the highest rate present, so no track is downsampled, and mono tracks are duplicated to both channels when they meet stereo material. Choosing to match the first file instead can downsample later tracks, and the result view reports when resampling happened.

Why is the output a WAV file?

WAV is lossless, so the joined result carries your tracks exactly as they were decoded, with no second generation of lossy compression added at the seams. You can convert the result to a compressed format afterwards if you need a smaller file.
