The Reinhard color transfer method converts both images to CIE-Lab color space, then adjusts the mean and standard deviation of each Lab channel in the target to match those of the source. This transfers the overall color mood without changing spatial content.
What is CIE-Lab color space?
CIE-Lab separates lightness (L) from color channels (a = green-red, b = blue-yellow). Color statistics transfer works better in Lab than in RGB because the channels are more perceptually independent.
