Frequently Asked Questions
Which readability score should I use?
For general prose, Flesch Reading Ease (higher = easier) or Flesch-Kincaid Grade (US school grade) are most common. SMOG and Gunning Fog target harder-to-read material. Coleman-Liau and ARI use character counts and work better for typed text. Averaging across all six gives the most reliable picture.
How accurate is the syllable count?
Pixlane uses a vowel-group heuristic tuned for English — reliably accurate within 5% compared to dictionaries. For other languages the count is approximate but still useful for relative comparisons.
What counts as a "complex word"?
Words with 3 or more syllables (excluding common suffixes like -es, -ed, -ing). This is the standard definition used by Gunning Fog and SMOG indices.
Are my texts sent to a server?
No. Word Counter runs 100% in your browser using vanilla JavaScript. Your drafts, research notes, and confidential documents never leave your device.
