Controls and Options

Drag the semitone slider for coarse musical intervals, +12 is a full octave up, -12 a full octave down, and use the cents slider for shifts finer than a semitone, such as matching a recording tuned away from concert pitch. The voice character toggle keeps a speaker's timbre natural on larger shifts.

Formats and Output

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, and FLAC inputs are decoded in the browser. The shifted result exports as 16-bit WAV at the source sample rate, with the file length identical to the input.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the pitch changed without changing the speed?

The audio is time-stretched by the reciprocal of the pitch ratio and then resampled back to its original length. The stretch stage rebuilds the waveform from overlapping grains aligned crest to crest, so after the resample every frequency has moved by the chosen interval while the file plays for exactly as long as before.

What do semitones and cents mean here?

A semitone is the step between two adjacent piano keys; twelve of them make an octave, which doubles or halves every frequency. A cent is a hundredth of a semitone. The two controls add together, so +3 semitones and +50 cents is a shift of 3.5 semitones.

When should I turn on voice character preservation?

When shifting speech or a lead vocal by more than a couple of semitones. A plain shift moves the vocal-tract resonances along with the pitch, which is the chipmunk sound going up and the boomy giant going down; preservation keeps that envelope in place so the voice reads as the same person at a new pitch. For instruments and full mixes it is usually better left off.

How far can I shift before it sounds unnatural?

Within about five semitones either way most material holds up well. Toward the full octave the resynthesis becomes audible, especially on dense mixes and sustained tones. That is a property of the method rather than a setting to adjust. Voices survive large shifts better with character preservation on.

Does the output length really stay the same?

Yes. The engine is run at a speed factor of exactly 1, so the output has the same duration as the input, and the reported metrics show both so this can be checked. Only the frequencies move.
