What exactly is an M4R file?

It measures the peak of the section you cut. If that peak sits below -6 dBFS, the whole section is scaled up so it peaks at -1 dBFS; the applied gain is reported in the results in decibels. It only ever raises. A section already peaking above -6 dBFS is left untouched, so nothing gets squashed or distorted.
